Obituary: Nichele “Kelly” Roakes

Maine woman dies in hit‑and‑run; family mourns and celebrates life
A 57‑year‑old Portland‑area woman died on August 24 after being struck in a hit‑and‑run accident. Nichele “Kelly” Roakes, a longtime resident of southern Maine and former cosmetology professional, was taken from the community at the height of a bright summer day.
Roakes was born in Garner, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1968, the daughter of Pearl Christian (LeMay) and Joseph “Dwight” Galarneau. She grew up in the region, attended local schools, and graduated in 1986. After working in several jobs, she earned her cosmetology license and built a career that she loved. Her artistic side was equally strong; she spent hours painting, crafting, and sewing. A well‑known baker, friends and family still remember her apple pies and chocolate‑chip cookies.
Beyond the salon, Roakes found peace in the outdoors. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, and birdwatching and always sought the sunshine. “She had a bright smile that could light up any room,” said one friend, reflecting on the many people she touched across her travels.
Roakes left a large family behind. Her mother, Pearl Christian, and siblings Sassy Sirois and Patrick Galarneau survived her. Her daughter Sara Galarneau and her two sons—Benjamin Roakes and Garret Roakes—were also devastated by the loss. The youngest members of the family, grandchildren Christopher and Charlotte, were left to carry on her memory.
The family also mourned the loss of her father, Joseph “Dwight” Galarneau, and her brother, Joseph “Jody” Dwight Galarneau Jr., who had passed before her. Many other relatives, including grandparents and aunts and uncles, were also predeceased.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Road, Casco. The family invites all who knew and loved Roakes to attend and share their memories. Arrangements are being handled by Hall Funeral Home, where tributes and condolences can be left at hallfuneralhome.net.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Pastor Jeff at Grace Street Ministry, P.O. Box 7967, Portland, ME 04112.
The sudden loss of Nichele “Kelly” Roakes has left a void in the hearts of her community, friends, and family. Her warmth, creativity, and love of life will be remembered for years to come.
