Obituary: Nancy Lee Wakefield

SOUTH PORTLAND – Nancy Lee Wakefield, 83, of South Portland, left us quietly on Oct. 27, 2026. Affectionately known as “Gee” or “GeeBee,” she was much beloved by her family and friends and was the epitome of all things good and kind.
Born on Nov. 11, 1942, to Alfred Quimby Gammon and Ethel Searle Wilson Gammon, Nancy was the eldest child. A graduate of Livermore Falls High School, she also attended the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing and Husson College. Never afraid to try something new, Nancy had various employment positions over the years, but her favorite was when she was Clerk of the District Court for Livermore Falls. A member of the Mayflower Society, Nancy was an avid genealogy sleuth, expertly gathering family history materials, tracing lineage and connecting the dots.
Nancy was blessed with 57 happy years of marriage to the late John D. Wakefield. Together they raised three children whom she adored: Darcy, Betsy and Jonathan. Nancy excelled as a mother, always ready with a warm hug and encouraging words. She taught by example, living her Christian faith in both word and deed, and she believed strongly in the power of prayer. Nancy was immensely proud of her grandchildren, celebrating every accomplishment, both big and small. She also accepted with good humor the roasting from her family of all her “Nancisms”. Truly, the best word to describe her is “love”. She taught us all how to love and be loved without demand or expectation.
She was predeceased by her husband John D. Wakefield, her eldest daughter Darcy Gammon Wakefield and her younger brother Michael G. Gammon.
Nancy is survived by her two children, Betsy Wakefield of South Portland, and Jonny Wakefield of Farmington. Nancy was particularly thankful for sons-in-law, Kevin Rouleau of South Portland and Steve Stout (Christine Bessette) of Kennebunk, and daughter-in-law Missy Wakefield of Farmington. Nancy also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren, Logan Buker, Sam Stout, Olivia Wakefield, Reece Bessette, Corinne Bessette and Magda Wakefield.
Please join us on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. at the North Livermore Baptist Church, 619 Federal Road, Livermore, Maine, to celebrate Nancy’s life and have some refreshments afterwards.
