Nancy Alice Slocum

PORTLAND – Nancy Alice Slocum passed away of natural causes at her home in Portland, Maine on Aug. 2, 2026, five days shy of her 82nd birthday.

Nancy was born in Key West, Fla. on Aug. 7, 1944 to Allan L. and Edythe H. Slocum during the time Allan was stationed there with the Navy. Her early childhood years were spent in Cranford, N.J. until her family moved to Damariscotta in 1956. She graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle in 1962, and went on to graduate from the University of Maine in Orono with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

After college, Nancy moved to New York City, N.Y., where she spent the next seven years working as a case manager for the NYC Department of Welfare wherein her compassion for others and desire to make a difference in the world served her well. She enjoyed life in The Big Apple, spending time going to Broadway plays, concerts, the beach, and the city’s nightlife. During that time, she and a friend traveled to Europe for an international adventure, enjoying the sights and people they met.

After New York, Nancy moved to Portland to work as a Department of Human Services unit supervisor. She remained there until retirement 30 years later.

Nancy was an animal lover her whole life, frequently donating to wildlife and animal welfare organizations. She was especially devoted to her cats, having many, two at a time, for all the years she lived in Portland. Nancy was also a book lover; she always had a book nearby and felt uncomfortable if she didn’t have the next one in mind. She was into rock ‘n roll music, often singing along to oldies from the ’60s and ’70s on WBLM; Dylan, Lennon, and Springsteen were a few favorites. What Nancy enjoyed most was spending time with her good friends. Movies, restaurants, concerts, plays, and all the attractions of Portland were regular pastimes, and she loved spending summer days on the beach. Nancy lived her life with a spirit of bold independence and lighthearted humor that many found inspirational.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Allan and Edythe Slocum.

She is survived by her brother, Arthur L. (Roy) Slocum and sister-in-law Deborah of Eastford, Conn., her sister, Jane Slocum of Damariscotta; her niece, Nicole Moss and her husband Colin and their children, Leah and Holly of North Yarmouth; her nephew, Michael Hanna of Damariscotta, her niece, Emily Slocum of Portland, and her nephew, Benjamin Slocum of Eastford, Conn.; also many cousins; and good friends.

Her family and friends will dearly miss Nancy, her wisdom and sage advice, her laughter and kindness, her thoughtfulness, and her homemade chili at Christmas family meals. She was loved by all who knew her.

A celebration of life for Nancy will be held at a later date.
