Maine Obituary: Minerva Margaret Shields, 85, Leaves a Legacy of Community and Kindness
Kennebunk, Maine – The Kennebunk community lost a beloved friend and family matriarch on October 16, 2026, when Minerva Margaret Shields, age 85, peacefully passed away in her home. A lifelong resident of Kennebunk, Minerva was known for her warmth, sharp intellect, and enduring devotion to family, friends, and the natural world.
Minerva was born on April 17, 1941, in Biddeford to Otis and Margaret Doane. She grew up in a close‑knit family that emphasized community service and simple pleasures. After graduating from Kennebunk High School in 1959, she embarked on a remarkable 43‑year career as a paralegal, working alongside colleagues such as Dave Emmons, Tom Reagan, and Wayne Adams. Her colleagues remembered her for her steady work ethic, keen attention to detail, and the respectful professionalism she brought to every case.
Beyond the courtroom, Minerva’s heart beat for the outdoors. She enjoyed camping trips with friends and family, where laughter blended with the rustle of leaves. A true birdwatcher, she carried an identification book to her feeders, ready to name every feathered visitor that paused to admire her garden. Her travels took her across the United States, and she shared a passion for fiddle music and spoon playing with anyone who would listen.
Family was the center of Minerva’s life. She was pre‑deceased by her parents, her siblings—Brewster, Daniel, and Kenneth Doane—and her aunts, Elizabeth Campbell and Carolyn Allbee. She survived by a loving husband, James Shields Sr., and her son, James “Jimmy” Shields Jr., who is married to Kathleen of Buxton. Her grandsons, Connor and Spencer Shields, brought her endless pride and joy throughout the years.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m., with interment at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
