Obituary: Maureen Gallagher

Maureen "Mo" Burke Gallagher, a former special education teacher and native of Portland, Maine, died on June 17, 2026, in Anaheim, California. She was 60 years old.

Gallagher was born in Portland and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where she prepared for a career in special education. She worked as a special education teacher in southern Maine before relocating to California in 2003 with her family. In Anaheim, she spent over two decades at The Hope School, continuing her work with students with special needs.

Known for her independent spirit, strong personality and quick sense of humor, Gallagher was described by her family as someone whose individuality left a lasting impression on those around her. Her humor, in particular, was a defining trait that brought joy to friends, colleagues and loved ones throughout her life.

Gallagher was especially devoted to her two sons, Shane Embleton and Ryan Gwartney. She took pleasure in simple, everyday moments with her family, including bus rides to Seal Beach with Ryan, camping trips, hiking excursions and traveling together. She was also a proud grandmother and took great delight in her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Gallagher and Patricia Gallagher Carlista.

Gallagher is survived by her son Shane and his wife Melissa, her son Ryan, and her grandchildren Harrison and Mason. She is also survived by her siblings, Anne Gallagher Dixon and her husband Mark, Theresa Gallagher Boucher and her husband Danny, Stephen Gallagher and his wife Susanne, and Susan Gallagher. Nieces and nephews Drew Dixon, Leah Dixon, Matthew Gallagher and Michelle Gregory also survive her.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for September 26, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Bruno's Restaurant in Portland.
