Obituary: Mary T. Maxwell

SACO — Mary T. Maxwell, a lifelong Maine resident whose warm spirit and boundless energy touched everyone she met, died on July 30, 2026. She was 96.
Maxwell, affectionately called “Nanny” and “Tommie” by family and friends, was celebrated for a life marked by devotion to her relatives and a passion for staying active. Well into her later years she could be found biking the back roads of York County, teeing off on the golf course, paddling a kayak across local waterways, or practicing Tai Chi Chih at the gym. An avid reader and enthusiastic learner, she also enjoyed creating handcrafted gifts for the people she loved, turning every gathering into an opportunity for shared creativity.
Family was the center of Maxwell’s world. She raised four daughters—Susan (Rob), Linda (David), Martha (Jeff) and Laura (Jeff)—who remember her as a constant source of encouragement and love. She was proud of her 11 grandchildren and 11 great‑grandchildren, many of whom spent summers at the Maxwell family camp on Kennebunk Pond. There, alongside her late husband Archie, she reveled in the natural beauty of the pond and the laughter of generations gathered around the campfire. Those idyllic days became cherished memories that her family vows to keep alive.
Beyond her personal achievements, Maxwell’s legacy is defined by her kindness and compassion. Neighbors recall how she was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer a listening ear, or simply be present in times of need. Her quiet strength and generous heart left an indelible mark on the community, inspiring others to follow her example of selfless service and warmth.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 12, beginning with visiting hours at 1 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m. at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main Street, Saco. A reception will follow the ceremony, offering friends and family a chance to share stories and celebrate Maxwell’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Biddeford Historical Society, PO Box 200, Biddeford, ME 04005. Online donations can be submitted via the society’s website. Those who wish to honor Mary T. Maxwell’s memory are encouraged to support the organization that preserves the region’s heritage, reflecting her own dedication to community and history.
