KENNEBUNK – It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Rachel Grady at the age of 86. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by friends and family on July 20, 2026.
Born on May 23, 1940, in River Canard, Ontario, Canada, Mary Jane was the daughter of the late Romeo and Lillian (Ryan) Monforton. She grew up on Malden Road alongside her 11 brothers and sisters. She first pursued a career as a nurse before devoting her life full time to caring for her family.
Mary Jane lived a life defined by service to others. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend who centered her life around her home, family, and faith. After the loss of her beloved husband, Dr. Joseph A. Grady in September of 1991, she rededicated herself to missionary work. Most notable and close to her heart was the Holy Spirit Medical Clinic in Maggotty, Jamaica which she founded as part of her deep Catholic faith. Mary Jane made many trips to the clinic in Maggotty to serve the poorest of the poor. Mary Jane also travelled to India to meet and work with Mother Theresa. Whether helping unwed mothers, housing families in need, or answering the call of her church across the globe, Mary Jane was happiest when taking care of others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph A. Grady M.D.; her daughter, Catherine Grady; as well as her brothers Orval, Roy, Fr. Marc OMI, Jim, Loyd, Nelson, and Leo Monforton, and her sister, Leona Langlois.
Mary Jane was the ninth of 12 children and is survived by her sisters Cecelia Monforton and Marguerite Reeb.
Mary Jane was the loving mother of Monica Rodgers (Austin White), Joseph (Laura) Grady, and Nicole Grady. She was the devoted stepmother to James L. Grady, the late Lisa Grady, and Mara Grady. Additionally, she was “Mim”, and the beloved “Mimmy Pants”, to Mannon and Shaw Rodgers; Yvette, Muriel, and Joseph Grady; Rhys Grady, Seth Grady, Sarah Lumsdon, and James and Joseph Collins.
Mary Jane will be deeply missed by her many nieces and nephews, as well as all of those whose lives she helped to shape and impact profoundly.
An hour of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., on Monday, Aug. 24, at Holy Spirit Parish – St. Mary’s Church, 236 Eldridge Road in Wells. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. A reception luncheon will follow at the church. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
