Obituary: Margaret Gustine Gilliam

PHIPPSBURG – Margaret Gustine Gilliam passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, following a brief illness. Born in Phippsburg, on Dec. 28, 1927, she was the daughter of Lewis Edwin and Susan Annora Wallace.

Margaret married James “Sonny” Gilliam, and together they shared a life full of family on the Maine coast. They raised four children: James Jr., Dana, Elaine, and Anthony. The couple raised their family in West Point, and for the last 50 years, they split their time between the warmth of Florida and their beloved summer home in Small Point.

In 1967, Sonny and Margaret opened North Creek Seafood, which Margaret managed with dedication for several years. She also spent many happy summers working at Sebasco Lodge until her retirement. Outside of work, Margaret found great joy in the simple beauties of life, especially gardening and caring for local wildlife. She was often found tending to her flowers or ensuring the birds were well-fed. Margaret loved to walk, she loved her friends, and also always loved a piece of chocolate.

She was predeceased by her husband, James; and two sons, James Jr. and Anthony. Margaret’s legacy of love lives on through her surviving family: her son, Dana Gilliam and his wife Lynne; her daughter, Elaine Cahill and her husband Skip; and her cherished five granddaughters; a grandson; seven great-granddaughters; six great-grandsons, and two great-great-granddaughters.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., on Aug. 6, 2026, at Morningside Cemetery, located at 88 Parker Head Road in Phippsburg. A celebration of life will follow immediately at the Bath Senior Citizens Center, 45 Floral Street in Bath.
