Maine Native Maciej “Matt” Buchholtz Dies at 47, Survived by Family

Portland, Maine – Maciej “Matt” Buchholtz, a longtime Maine resident who had spent his early years in Poland, died on September 2, 2026, after a battle with terminal glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.

Buchholtz was born in Warsaw, Poland, on December 28, 1978. When he was five, his parents fled the country as political refugees and sought asylum at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw. The family eventually settled in the United States, where Matt completed his entire education in Maine, graduating from the University of Maine in Orono.

After college, he launched his professional career in Boston and Chicago, holding positions that drew on his background in the region’s dynamic business and technology sectors. While his work took him across the country, his heart remained in Maine, where he was a beloved community member and a frequent supporter of local charitable initiatives.

Buchholtz’s diagnosis of glioblastoma came in the latter part of the year, and he faced the disease with the same determination that had guided his life. He passed away on the morning of September 2, surrounded by his immediate family. His wife, two adult children, and a close-knit circle of friends mourn the loss of a devoted husband, father, and friend.

“Matt was a pillar of our community and a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him,” said one friend, who asked to remain anonymous. “His courage in facing such a difficult illness was a testament to the strength of his character.”

Maine News Now extends its deepest condolences to the Buchholtz family during this difficult time. A private memorial service will be held at a later date, and the family has requested privacy as they grieve and celebrate Matt’s life.
