South Berwick, Maine — The community of South Berwick lost a longtime resident and veteran this past week. Linwood D. Libby, 91, died at his home on Thursday, September 24, 2026. Born February 5, 1935, in Fort Fairfield, Libby spent most of his life in Maine, working in several key local industries and serving his country with distinction.
Libby was the son of Eldon and Vera Merrithew Libby. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School before enlisting in the National Guard. His military career continued with active duty in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. After returning home, he pursued higher education at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.
His professional life was marked by long tenures at several major employers. For a decade he served as a director at WCSH, the local television station. He then spent 25 years working at the South Portland Shipyard, a cornerstone of the region’s maritime economy. In his later years, Libby worked for Shields Meat and eventually took a position as a toll‑taker at the York Plaza on the Maine Turnpike.
Libby was pre‑deceased by his wife, Patricia, who survived him for many years. He is survived by his daughter, Denise Libby of Saco, and his brother, Beverly Libby of Caribou.
A graveside service honoring his military service will take place Friday, October 9, at 1:00 p.m. at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Caribou. The ceremony will include U.S. military honors. Local arrangements are being handled by Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home in Saco.
Friends and family wishing to honor Libby’s memory may make memorial contributions in his name to the Animal Welfare Society at P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.
