Pownal Community Mourns the Loss of Lillian “Lili” Golding Hall

POWNAL, ME – Lillian Louise Golding Hall, a longtime resident of Pownal, died Friday, September 4, 2026, at the age of 80. Born July 15, 1946, in Brunswick to James and Thelma Golding, Lili grew up in the small town, graduated from Freeport High School in 1964, and went on to live a life marked by travel, work, and family.

After marrying Brian Hall in 1967, the couple set out on a year‑long road trip that took them through 34 U.S. states and Mexico in a Cadillac Herse equipped with a cook stove and a mattress. The journey, a blend of adventure and adventure, preceded their return to Pownal, where they began their family.

Settling in Durham, Maine, Lili and Brian raised their son, Christian Hall, who would become the center of their lives. “Christian was the joy of their lives,” said a family friend.

Lili spent most of her professional career at L.L. Bean, where she worked for 33 years before retiring. She then devoted a decade to the United Way in Bath, forging lasting friendships along the way. In 2003, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, a battle she fought successfully.

Family, holiday traditions, and travel were cornerstones of Lili’s life. “She was happiest when she was with family,” noted a close friend. She cherished summer camps, especially the annual week spent with loved ones, and loved Christmas. Trips to North Conway, New Hampshire, with three close friends were also a favorite.

She is survived by her son Christian, her partner Hilary of Durham, and grandchildren Megan and Alexander Hall. She leaves behind sister Ini Harrison and her husband Pete of Freeport, sister‑in‑law Elaine Penley of Auburn, and half‑sister Margee Larivee and her husband David. Lili adored all her nieces, nephews, and their children, believing that family was everything.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at The First Parish Congregational Church, 422 Hallowell Road, Pownal. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pownal Church.
