Allegheny College Professor Jonathan Helmreich, 89, Dies in Meadville
Jonathan E. Helmreich, an esteemed professor of history and longtime community leader in Crawford County, passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, September 28, 2026, while visiting family in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Helmreich was born in Brunswick, Maine, on December 21, 1936. He graduated from Amherst College in 1958 before earning a Ph.D. in history from Princeton University in 1961. In 1962 he joined the faculty at Allegheny College, where he taught European, Russian, and Soviet history. He served as academic dean from 1966 to 1981 and continued to teach until his retirement in 1998, after which he volunteered as the college’s historian. The institution honored him as an honorary member of its 2018 graduating class and awarded him the Alumni Medal.
A devoted family man, Helmreich was married twice. He wed Martha Schaff in 1959, with whom he had three children before their divorce. He married Nancy (Moyers) Ross in 1979. His children are Anne (Christian Wulffen), Dana (David Parfitt), and Douglas (Julie). He is also survived by stepchildren Michael Ross (Helen), James Ross (Darlene), Mary Miller (Kevin), Douglas Ross (Cheryl Hudson), and Susan Shrock (Larry Marsteller), as well as four grandchildren, ten step‑grandchildren, and ten step‑great‑grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernst C. and Louise R. Helmreich, and his brother, Paul.
Helmreich’s community involvement spanned several decades. A longtime member of Stone United Methodist Church in Meadville, he served on multiple committees and sang in the church choir for 33 years. He helped found the United Housing Corporation and played a key role in developing the Fairmont/Fairview low‑ and moderate‑income apartment complex. He also sat on the boards of the French Creek Valley Conservancy, Greendale Cemetery, the Erie Philharmonic, and the Crawford County Historical Society. For his service, he received the Robert T. Sherman Distinguished Service Award from Allegheny College and the Raymond P. Shafer Award for Distinguished Community Service from the City of Meadville.
Outside the classroom, Helmreich was an avid outdoorsman, hiking the Appalachian Trail and the Teton and Wind River ranges, and sailing whenever he could.
An interment service will take place privately at Greendale Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Rose and Waid Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 581 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Allegheny College at a future date to be announced.
