John P. “Jack” Flynn, 88, Leaves Legacy of Coaching, Family and Faith in South Portland

South Portland, Maine – John P. “Jack” Flynn, a longtime educator, coach, and community pillar, died peacefully on Oct. 2, 2026, surrounded by his wife, family, and friends. Born on Jan. 27, 1938, in Danvers, Massachusetts, Flynn’s life spanned more than eight decades of service to students and athletes, and his influence is still felt across Maine’s sports halls and classrooms.

Early Years and Education

Jack grew up in Danvers, attending the local elementary schools before enrolling at Holton High School. There he distinguished himself as a letterman in football, basketball, and track, often captaining teams under the guidance of multi‑sport coach George Radulski. His passion for athletics and teaching led him to Bates College, where he became the first member of his family to attend college. While at Bates, he earned recognition on the Sunday Telegram All‑Maine Team and graduated in 1960.

A Life of Marriage and Family

In June 1960, shortly after graduation, Jack married Carol Heldman, who would become his partner for 66 years. Together, they traveled extensively, exploring many countries while remaining deeply rooted in their local community. Their marriage produced four children—Deborah (Racine), Catherine (Solario), Brian (Gervaise), and John—who all went on to establish families of their own. Jack and Carol’s grandchildren include Jennifer, Kiely, Christopher (Ellery), Tyler, Andrew, Elizabeth, Josiah, and Mary, while a great‑grandchild, George, was born on New Year’s Day, 2025, bringing the family great joy.

A Career Dedicated to Youth

From 1960 until 1993, Jack served South Portland High School in multiple capacities: teacher, guidance counselor, football coach, and athletic director. His tenure was marked by a commitment to mentoring young athletes, many of whom remained in his life long after graduation. After retiring, he briefly joined Howard Vandersea as an assistant coach at Bowdoin College, then returned to coaching in a more hands‑on role at Scarborough High School, where he guided the team to its first state football championship—a testament to his enduring coaching acumen.

Accolades and Honors

Flynn’s contributions were recognized by several institutions. He was inducted into the Danvers High School Hall of Fame, the South Portland Football Hall of Fame, and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. The Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame honored him, and he received multiple Coach of the Year awards over his career. His legacy in coaching extends beyond trophies; many former players recall his lifelong support and guidance.

Faith and Community

A devoted parishioner of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Jack lived by the principles of humility, kindness, and steadfast purpose. His faith guided his interactions with students, colleagues, and family alike. Even in his final months, the family expressed gratitude to the compassionate care teams who supported him, as well as to the Gosnell House for their assistance.

Funeral and Memorial Services

Visiting hours will be held at Conroy‑Tully Walker Funeral Home (1024 Broadway, South Portland) on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Christian burial Mass will take place on Friday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church (124 Cottage Rd., South Portland). Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway. The family plans a reception after the committal and encourages condolences to be shared online at Conroy‑Tully Walker’s memorial page.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a charity of the giver’s choice.

Remembering a Mentor

Jack Flynn’s legacy lives on not only through the trophies and halls of fame but in the countless lives he touched. From the field to the classroom, from his students to his grandchildren, his influence remains a guiding force. As the family gathers to celebrate his life, they will reflect on a man who embodied the spirit of service, dedication, and love.
