Maine Man John McIntosh Jr. Dies at 90, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Family, Friendship and Golf
BABCOK RANCH, Fla. – John Arland McIntosh Jr. died August 31, 2026, at his home in Babcock Ranch, Florida, surrounded by relatives and close friends. The 90‑year‑old Portland native had spent a life filled with love, work, and a passion for the game of golf.
McIntosh was born April 26, 1936, in Portland, Maine, and grew up in the city’s neighborhoods and parks. He attended high school in Portland, where he met Arlene Gloria McIntosh, his future wife. The couple wed and enjoyed a partnership that would last more than seventy years. Arlene predeceased her husband in September 2024, and McIntosh carried her memory with him until his own passing.
For more than four decades, the McIntosh family spent summer vacations on Harbor Island in Boothbay Harbor. The island’s calm waters, boating opportunities and proximity to family friends made it a cherished retreat. “We had a lot of great memories on the water,” a relative recalled. “It was a place where we could all come together.”
McIntosh’s formative years were shaped by his involvement with the Boys and Girls Club in Portland. The organization’s mentorship and community values stayed with him, influencing both his character and his later professional relationships. He has long credited the lessons learned there as a foundation for his success.
After high school, McIntosh entered the workforce with Interstate Uniforms, a company that provided him a steady career until he retired at the age of 45. He then pivoted to real estate, building a second career that spanned Florida and Maine. His reputation as a mentor in the industry earned him recognition among entrepreneurs who benefited from his guidance.
Golf, however, was the sport that captured McIntosh’s heart. He was a regular at courses across the country and often competed in tournaments. “I loved the game, the competition, and the friendships it brought,” he once said to a friend. His most memorable moments included several holes‑in‑one, achievements he proudly shared with family and peers.
In his later years, McIntosh split his time between Babcock Ranch, Aventura, and Cumberland Foreside, Maine, enjoying the company of relatives and friends. His immediate family includes his brother Wayne McIntosh of South Portland; his son John Arland McIntosh III of Hakalau, Hawaii; daughter Julie Ann McIntosh Cope of Babcock Ranch; son‑in‑law Andrew Cope; and six grandchildren—Jennifer Elsaesser, Kelly Russack, Sarah Hernandez, Carly Cope, Ashley Cope, and Lindsay Maraglia. The family celebrated his life with a small gathering of loved ones and shared memories.
A memorial service to honor McIntosh’s life is scheduled for June 2027. Family members will provide additional details as the date approaches. In lieu of flowers, attendees and friends are encouraged to donate to the Boys and Girls Club in Portland, an organization that played a pivotal role in the man’s upbringing.
John Arland McIntosh Jr.’s life story is one of dedication to family, community, and the pursuit of personal passions. His legacy continues through the values he imparted, the friendships he forged, and the countless rounds of golf that brought him joy.
