Obituary: Janet I. Dumont

Janet I. Dumont, 89, whose life spanned nearly nine decades of Maine’s coastal communities, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026, at Pinnacle Health and Rehab in South Portland.
Born in Biddeford and raised in the seaside town of Old Orchard Beach, Dumont grew up alongside her sisters Barbara and Sharon in a family rooted in the region’s daily rhythms. She attended local schools and graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1955, then pursued her calling in health care by earning a degree as a registered nurse from the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in Portland. Those who knew her recalled a career defined by dedication to patients and a quiet professionalism that earned lasting respect.
In 1959, she married Joseph “Ken” Dumont, and the couple built a life together in the area until his passing in January 2026. Dumont is survived by her three daughters: Laurie Schwartz of South Portland, Kim Dambach and her husband Tim of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, and Dawn Hall of Saco. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara Boutet of Saco and Sharon Stackpole of Norwich, Connecticut, as well as five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Cleaves Lord, her father, Edward Lord, and her stepmother, Barbara Lord; as well as her son-in-law, Timothy Schwartz, and her husband of many years, Joseph “Ken” Dumont.
Those close to her described her final days as peaceful, and the family extends gratitude to the staff at Pinnacle Health and Rehab and Affinity Hospice for their compassionate care. A private family burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, with arrangements entrusted to Dennett, Craig & Pate of Saco.
Janet I. Dumont is remembered as a nurse, a mother, a sister, and a steadfast presence in the communities that raised her. Her life reflects the strong family ties and resilient spirit that have long characterized life along the Maine coast, and she will be missed by all who knew her.
