PORTLAND — Hurshell Alexander Crossman Jr., a longtime Portland resident and beloved figure on Willard Beach, passed away recently at the age of 77.

Born on May 20, 1947, in Portland to Beatrice and Hurshell Crossman Sr., Crossman spent his formative years on Willard Beach, where his playful nature often got him and the neighborhood children into lighthearted mischief. A graduate of South Portland High School, Class of 1967, he was consistently voted the best dancer in his year.

Following high school, Crossman pursued his passion for the culinary arts, earning an associate degree from the Southern Maine Vocational Technology Institute. He then attended Pierre’s Beauty School, graduating in 1970, a moment he described as falling in love with his profession. This passion led him to own and operate his own salon, “House Of Hair,” for over 55 years. The salon became more than a business; it was a cornerstone of the community, where Crossman’s loyal customers and their families became an extended part of his own.

Crossman’s life was defined by deep family bonds. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Richard Andersen, and his daughter, Robyn Lyn. He is survived by his sisters, Jeraldyne of Scarborough and Donna of West Columbia, South Carolina, along with a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and his two grandchildren, Zasu Alexandria and Zachery Andersen. He also leaves behind his son-in-law, Bryan White, and his wife, Susan.

A special acknowledgment was given to Molly at Andwell Health Partners for her kindness and support during Crossman’s life.

A visitation will be held at Hobb’s Funeral Home on Cottage Road in South Portland on Friday, June 12, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at 2 p.m., with a reception to take place at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the charity closest to one’s heart.
