WEST BATH – Frank W. Sparks III, 83, of Birch Point, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026.
He was born in Bath on April 16, 1943, a son of Frank Sparks Jr. and Evangeline M. Sparks and grew up in Woolwich. He graduated from Morse High School in 1961 and upon graduation, entered the United States Navy, later being honorably discharged in 1965. While serving in the U.S. Navy he was stationed on board the USS Intrepid CVS-II, now a museum in New York City, N.Y. Frank was also a member of the commissioning crew of the USS Conyngham DDG-17.
In 1968, Frank graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, now SMCC, in the first class to receive an associate’s degree in Electronics Technology. Frank was employed at Bath Iron Works, retiring in 2005 after 34 years in various capacities in both production and management, including assistant manager of estimating and contracts at the Portland Facilities of B.I.W. at one time.
In 2003, he accomplished one of the deepest desires in life when he built a year-round home on the site of the family cottage at Birch Point, overlooking the Winnegance Bay, off the New Meadows River. It was here that he enjoyed retirement living in the “STRESS-FREE zone”. Frank took the ease of summer to heart through gardening, boating nearly every day, and fishing, especially for striped bass. While he was known as the go-to guy for finding fish in the area, he became somewhat of a local legend in the West Bath area for his fish whispering capabilities. A learner and teacher at heart, Frank took pride in sharing his passion for good health and living by the land with others.
He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron for over 40 years, Maine Island Association, Maine Maritime Museum, Island Institute, USS Conyngham DDG-17, and West Bath Historical Society.
He was predeceased by his mother, father; brother, Mike and sister, Diane Hawthorne.
He is survived by one son, Warren McCourt and his wife Melissa of Topsham, two daughters, Nina Walsh and Stephanie Walsh and her partner Phil of Scarborough; two nephews, Franklin and Andrew Sparks, three nieces, Holly Mills and her husband Robbie, Jill Moody and Jayne Lewis and her husband Richard; two grandchildren Shawn and Jackie; and three great grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 17 at Riverside Cemetery off the River Road in Woolwich.
