Maine Veteran and Educator Francis “Frank” Pizziferri Dies at 91

South Portland, Maine – Francis “Frank” C. Pizziferri, a longtime resident of South Portland and a veteran of the U.S. armed forces, died peacefully on June 7, 2026, at the Maine Veterans Home. The 91‑year‑old was a former resident of Palm City, Florida, before returning to Maine, where he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones.

Pizziferri was known in the community for his multifaceted life. He spent nearly three decades as a professor at Worcester State University, where he taught courses in social anthropology and world studies. He earned a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a master’s degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and a bachelor’s from Boston University. In addition to his academic career, he was an active union organizer and a passionate commentator on politics and current events.

A man of many interests, Frank enjoyed sailing, fishing, playing cards, and reading. Colleagues and friends remembered his sharp wit and sarcastic humor, noting that a conversation with him was often an opportunity to learn something new.

Frank is survived by his wife, Shirley; his son Domenic (Marcia) of Boynton Beach, Florida; his daughters Lisa LeDoux of Biddeford, Maine, and Michelle Smith (James) of Bainbridge Island, Washington; and his grandchildren, Zachary and Emily LeDoux. He also leaves behind his sister Mary Clougherty, many nieces and nephews, and the memory of brothers Michael, Joseph, James, and sister Angelina Mullaney, who predeceased him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, details of which will be announced by the family. The community of South Portland and the broader Maine area mourn the loss of a devoted educator, veteran, and friend.
