Esrael Bergeron

PORTLAND – Esrael Bergeron, 22, of Portland, Maine, died unexpectedly on July 12, 2026. Born in Ethiopia on April 13, 2004, Esrael spent most of his life growing up in Portland with his mom, Louise Bergeron, and his brother, Andre Bergeron.

From an early age, Esrael was quick-witted, curious, funny, and more than a little mischievous. He had a sharp and perceptive mind and could debate almost any point—whether or not he actually agreed with it. He was fascinated by what made people think and behave as they did, and he rarely saw the world in conventional terms.

Esrael had a strong sense of justice and was quick to recognize unfairness, particularly racial and social injustice. He instinctively stood up for those who were bullied, overlooked, or underrepresented. Independent and determined to find his own way, he faced significant challenges in his short life, often insisting on meeting them on his own terms.

Esrael cared deeply about others, even when it was difficult for him to believe how deeply he was cared for in return. He was fiercely loyal to his friends and had a special love for his dogs. He loved rap music and often expressed himself by writing lyrics of his own. He will be remembered for his humor, his intelligence, his fighting spirit, and for being entirely and unmistakably himself.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Those wishing to honor Esrael’s memory may consider a donation to:

Restorative Justice Project Maine or to:

Community Change Inc.’s Anti-Racism Organization in Maine (AROM).
