Edward “Rick” Hinds of Saco Bay dies at 78 after long battle with dementia
SACO – Edward Eric “Rick” Hinds, a longtime resident of The Landing at Saco Bay and a lifelong educator and community volunteer, died on August 29, 2026, at his home in Saco. He was 78 and had been living with dementia for several years.
Hinds was born in Portland, Maine, to Edward C. and Elizabeth A. (Lailer) Hinds, the eldest of three children. He spent his childhood in Cape Elizabeth, graduating from Cape Elizabeth High School before heading south for college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Gardner–Webb University in North Carolina and later obtained a teaching certificate, which set the stage for a career in education and service.
A career that spanned many roles
Hinds’ professional life began as a paper boy and evolved into a managerial position as produce manager at Shaw’s. He later worked for Portland Glass and served as a “shop” teacher at Gorham Junior High School and Bonney Eagle Middle School. He remained at Bonney Eagle until his retirement, a career that spanned more than three decades and touched the lives of countless students and colleagues.
After retirement, Hinds devoted his time to the community. He coached girls’ field hockey and softball teams at both Gorham Junior High and Bonney Eagle, fostering teamwork and athletic skill among the young athletes. He also remained active in the local Civil War reenactment scene, an enthusiast and long‑time member of the 5th Maine Regiment.
Craftsman and outdoorsman
Hinds was a skilled woodworker who built furniture, canoes, and even his own home. His craftsmanship was admired by friends and neighbors alike. An avid runner, he competed in numerous races throughout his life, including a marathon run at Boston, a testament to his endurance and love of the outdoors.
Family and friends
He is survived by his brother, David Hinds, and sister, Ann McGillan. The family also includes four nieces and two nephews who remember him fondly. “Rick was a pillar of our community and a mentor to so many,” said David Hinds. “He taught us that dedication and kindness go hand in hand.”

Rick Hinds will be remembered by all who knew him as a dedicated educator, a passionate community volunteer, and a master craftsman who left an indelible mark on Saco Bay and beyond.
