CAPE ELIZABETH – Dottie Gray, 101, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, surrounded by family at Gosnell House in Scarborough. She was born on June 14, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, one of eight children of the late Olwin and Joseph F. Singer Sr.
Dottie married Benjamin F. Gray in 1948, with whom she raised six children. In addition to being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dottie was active in her church and community, volunteering at many theaters and concert halls. After ten years of competitive tennis, at the age of 54, Dottie began running. She joined the St. Louis Track Club and competed in road races across the country. Dottie’s favorite races included the B2B 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and the Falmouth Road Race in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The Portland Sea Dogs Mothers Day 5K combined her greatest loves – baseball, as a long time fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, running, and spending time with family.
Among the many milestones of her well-lived life Dottie was proudly a World and American age-group record holder in track and field. She remains in the top ten all-time performers in all track events and road races of the National Senior Games. Her illustrious career was capstoned by the completion of five marathons: Boston, Chicago, New York, and St. Louis (twice).
In 2020 Dottie moved to Maine joining her daughter and daughter-in-law in Cape Elizabeth where she immediately became an integral part of her new community. She enjoyed visiting with friends, playing any kind of games, participating in activities at the Sam L. Cohen Center, eating Red’s ice cream, and chocolate.
Dottie was kind, compassionate, fun-loving, and devoted to her family and community. She leaves a legacy of strength and perseverance that will be carried forward by those who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her six children, 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, on Sunday, August 16, at 3 p.m.
