Dorothy Corkhill, 92, Dies in Maine After a Life of Service and Family

Dorothy Claire (Freeman) Corkhill, a lifelong nurse, volunteer, and devoted mother, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, at the Thornton Hall care facility in Brunswick, Maine. She was surrounded by her husband, Bill, and their extended family as she spent her final days in hospice care.

Born on August 20, 1934, in Yonkers, New York, Dorothy grew up as the daughter of Mary (Farrell) Freeman and Raymond Freeman. She attended Gorton High School before earning a nursing diploma from Johns Hopkins University. She continued her studies with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Teachers College, Columbia University, and later completed a master’s degree at Boston University after receiving a full scholarship.

Dorothy’s early career saw her working as a public‑health nurse in Manhattan, where she cared for underserved communities and developed a reputation for compassion and professionalism. Her dedication to nursing led her to pursue further education and training, solidifying her lifelong commitment to health care.

In 1963, Dorothy met William “Bill” Corkhill at a Fourth of July celebration in Quogue, Long Island. The two quickly formed a bond, and on February 8, 1964, they married in Bronxville, New York. The couple settled in Sea Cliff, New York, where they raised three children. After the birth of their first child, Dorothy chose to focus entirely on her family, attending countless school events, recitals, and games for her sons and daughters.

The family’s connection to Maine began in 1985 when Dorothy and Bill restored an old farmhouse on Merrymeeting Bay in Bowdoinham. The project, carried out with local artisans, deepened their appreciation for the state’s natural beauty and community spirit. When Bill retired in 1994, the Corkhills moved to Mill Cove in Harpswell, where they continued to enjoy the Maine lifestyle—traveling, playing tennis and golf, reading, walking, boating, volunteering, and spending time with friends and relatives.

Dorothy’s love of books began in childhood after the early deaths of her sister and infant brother. She turned to nonfiction about real people and events for comfort and insight, a habit that persisted throughout her life. Her passion for reading led her to volunteer at the Curtis Memorial Library, often losing herself among the shelves as she sorted books for the library’s annual sale.

In the later years of her life, Dorothy faced Parkinson’s disease with quiet resilience. In December 2025, the Corkhills relocated to Thornton Hall in Brunswick, where Dorothy received loving care from Bill and the facility’s staff. She entered hospice care in the weeks before her passing, surrounded by the people she loved most.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Bill; her son, William “Bill” Corkhill, Jr., of Wellesley, Massachusetts, his wife Sheila, and their children Fiona, Willie, Iain, and Duncan; daughter Lee Corkhill of Portland, her partner Rushmore DeNooyer, and their son Charlie Graffius; and daughter Monica Davis of Bar Harbor, her husband Scott, and their children Simon and Ella. The family has expressed deep gratitude to CHANS Hospice and to the staff at Thornton Hall for the compassion and dignity shown to Dorothy and her loved ones.

A private family service will be held. Friends and neighbors are invited to share memories and condolences through the online platform at funeralalternatives.net. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick or to CHANS Hospice, in honor of the care that sustained Dorothy in her final months.

Dorothy Corkhill’s life, defined by curiosity, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family and community, will be remembered with affection by all who were fortunate to know her.
