Maine Community Mourns Long‑Serving Public Servant and Sports Enthusiast

Scarborough, Maine – Dennis “Denny” H. Siewertsen, an 80‑year‑old resident of Scarborough, died on August 27, 2026, after a courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife Marie, his son Marc and Marc’s wife Cathy at the time of his passing.

Siewertsen was born April 25, 1946, to Mildred Bowen and Howard Siewertsen. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1964 and served in the Marine Reserves from 1965 to 1971. On September 2, 1972, he married Marie DeSimon, and the couple remained together for more than fifty years.

For 27 years he worked with Maine’s Department of Correction Juvenile Services, rising to a supervisory position in his final decade. His colleagues remembered him as a dedicated and compassionate leader who always put the needs of the department and its youth first.

Outside of work, Denny was an avid athlete. He played softball for over 35 years and organized an annual golf trip to Southwest Florida for 30 years, a tradition that kept him connected with friends and family across the country. He was a member of several local golf clubs, including Falmouth Country Club, Dunegrass Golf Club, Willowdale Golf Club, and Riverside Golf Course. His favorite pastime was playing golf with his son Marc, and he often recalled the excitement of competing in the Club Championship Finals where father and son were tied on the final hole.

Siewertsen’s family includes his wife Marie; son Marc and his wife Cathy, who reside in Westbrook; and granddaughter Samantha, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. He also leaves behind a network of siblings and extended family, including sisters Cathy Pelham and Sandra Bray, and several brothers‑in‑law and sisters‑in‑law. His predeceased parents, Mildred Bowen and Howard Siewertsen, as well as his mother‑in‑law Dorothy DeSimon, father‑in‑law Christopher DeSimone, and brother‑in‑law Lew Richards, are also remembered.

A celebration of life will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, at Bruno’s Restaurant in Scarborough. Friends, colleagues, and neighbors are invited to honor Denny’s legacy and share memories of a man who touched many lives through his dedication to public service, love of sport, and devotion to family.
