Maine’s longtime Portland resident Cynthia “Cindy” Chapman dies at 74

Portland, Aug. 21 (Maine News Now) – Cynthia Ann Chapman, affectionately known as “Cindy,” passed away peacefully at Seaside Health Care in Portland on Thursday, Aug. 20. The 74‑year‑old was born in Bangor on March 2, 1952, to Franklin and Madelyn (Binnette) Chapman.

A native of Old Town, Cindy’s early years were spent with her family in Pittsfield, where she graduated from Nokomis High School. After college, she made Portland her home for more than five decades, living independently and becoming a familiar face on the city’s buses. “She could name every route and every driver,” said a longtime neighbor, recalling the woman’s cheerful banter and quick wit.

Cindy was a devout member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where she often helped organize parish events and shared a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her faith, she said, guided her daily life and gave her strength in times of challenge.

Family meant everything to Cindy. She celebrated every birthday, anniversary and holiday with carefully chosen cards and thoughtful gifts, and never missed a chance to gather with relatives for Christmas or the Fourth of July at Cold Stream. Her siblings, five in total, and their extended families will remember her as a loving aunt, sister and friend.

Survivors include:

  • Mary (Chapman) and Donald Fletcher; their daughter Chaney and Mark Wahl (children Mark Jr., Bradley and Cameron) and son Christopher and Alexis (Ramos) Fletcher (children Carter, Alivia and Cooper).
  • Ralph and Althea (Lyons) Chapman; their son Thomas and Marta (Leon) Chapman and daughter Madelyn and Travis Choy.
  • Alice Chapman and Rajan Gupta; their son Neel and Aliena (Krausert) Gupta (daughter Gabriella Mae) and son Nevin Gupta.
  • Christine (Chapman) and Christopher Urban; their daughter Catherine (Urban) and Andrew DeGrado (daughter Marilyn) and son John and Annie (Parks) Urban (daughters Jane and Sybil).
  • Kenneth and Beth (Blair) Chapman; their sons Alexander and William.

Cindy’s warm spirit and infectious laughter left a lasting impression on anyone who knew her. Her neighbors and friends will miss her presence on the streets of Portland, where she was always ready with a joke and a kind word. The community will remember her for her unwavering devotion to family, faith and the city she called home.
