Christine Card Patton, 93, Leaves Legacy of History, Service, and Warmth in Maine

Topsham, Maine — Christine Card Patton, a longtime steward of local history and an active community volunteer, passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, after a protracted illness. She was 93.

Patton was born in Medford, Massachusetts, on Dec. 27, 1932, to Esther Bates Card, a French teacher who later served as a parliamentarian, and Philip Weatherbee Card, a dentist. Growing up in Arlington, she graduated from Arlington High School in 1950 as salutatorian and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College in 1954. She went on to receive a master’s in social work from the University of Chicago in 1956, a year before marrying her future husband, Dr. Anthony Seavey Patton, a cardiovascular surgeon, at the College Avenue Church in Somerville. The couple was married for 67 years until Tony’s death in 2023.

The Pattons raised three children and shared their home with an eclectic array of pets, including golden retrievers, a bloodhound, chocolate Labrador retrievers, cats, bunnies, a parrot, a goat, and numerous small animals. They lived in several locations over the years—Devonshire, England; Salem, Massachusetts; Danvers; Boothbay, Maine; and Topsham—each stop shaping Christine’s lifelong devotion to community service.

Patton’s early career was rooted in social work; she was licensed at Massachusetts General Hospital before stepping back to raise a family. Her passion for history and preservation manifested most clearly in the Danvers Historic Society, where she devoted more than 30 years to volunteer hours, leadership roles, and the restoration of historic properties such as Samuel McIntire’s Derby Summer House on the grounds of Glen Magna Farms. In 1984, she joined the House of the Seven Gables and Settlement Association in Salem as Director of Marketing and Public Relations, a post she held until 1995. In retirement, she established the Chris Patton Garden Fund, which continues to nurture the gardens at the Gables.

During her time in Maine, the Pattons built a summer residence on Barters Island in Boothbay. Christine became a vigorous member of the Boothbay Regional Land Trust board and contributed as a reporter for the Boothbay Register. She later helped raise funds for Maine Health MidCoast Hospital and remained socially active in the Highland Green residential community in Topsham.

Beyond her professional and volunteer work, Patton was known for her gentle warmth and impeccable style. “Even as the cruelties of her dementia slowly eroded her memory and, in the end, her ability to speak, her warmth, twinkle, and social grace held fast,” noted a close friend. She often wore sunglasses perched on her head indoors, a quirk that endeared her to neighbors and friends alike.

Patton is survived by her children and their spouses—Kimberley Patton and Bruce Beck of Newburyport; Geoffrey Patton and Karen Kent of Ashland; and Laurie Patton and Shalom Goldman of Shoreham, Vermont—along with a host of grandchildren and step‑grandchildren, including Lee Patton and Taylor Epperly, Caitlyn Patton and Cat Kemmett, Christina Calfo and Justin Calfo, and the Goldman children.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. in the Northshore Unitarian Universalist Church, 323 Locust St., Danvers. The church’s Book of Memories page will be available at www.bibberfuneral.com for those wishing to share memories or condolences. Arrangements are managed by Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of the following organizations that were dear to Patton:

  • The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association or its Chris Patton Garden Fund (Salem, Massachusetts)
  • Northshore Unitarian Universalist Church (Danvers)
  • Danvers Historical Society (Danvers)
  • Boothbay Regional Land Trust (Boothbay, Maine)
  • Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts)

Christine Card Patton’s life, marked by a commitment to history, community, and the natural world, will be remembered by all who knew her.
