Charles Lemuel Sawyer
GORHAM – Charles Lemuel Sawyer, 95, a longtime resident of Gorham, passed away on Aug. 6, 2026.
Born in Westbrook, Charles was the son of the late Hall C. Sawyer Sr. and Vena (Cloudman) Sawyer. He was raised in the Little Falls section of Gorham and attended Gorham High School, where he played baseball and basketball. Following his graduation in 1949, Charles served for four years in the USAF. Upon returning to civilian life, he attended Gorham State Teachers College (now USM). It was there that he met Jeannie Pinkham. The two were married in 1957 and graduated in 1958. After settling in Gorham, their son Eric was born in 1965.
Charles was a schoolteacher for 29 years, teaching briefly in Augusta but primarily in the Gorham school system. Following his retirement from teaching, he continued working as a security guard for Suburban Security and Hannaford. An avid outdoorsman, Charles enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing, with a special fondness for his camp near Parlin Pond. He was a long-time member of the Windham-Gorham Rod and Gun Club and a ham radio enthusiast, licensed as KA1AIF.
Charles is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jeannie; son Eric and his wife Dorise of Windham; as well as nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Hall Sawyer Jr., and his sister, Eugenia Page.
There will be no funeral service. The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Beacon Hospice and the Gosnell House for their compassionate support and care.
