Carol Ann Mary (Shawcross) Picard

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Carol Ann Mary (Shawcross) Picard, 79, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 22, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., on May 11, 1947, she was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph and Claire M. Shawcross. She was raised in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School. She was married to Gerard “Gerry” Picard for more than 61 years. They lived in Merrimac, Mass., Haverhill, Mass., and North Andover, Mass., before settling in Billerica, Mass., in 1971. As a young family, summer vacations to New England beaches and lakes were cherished.

Carol is survived by her husband, Gerry, and their three daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Daniel Brandano of Billerica, Mass., Debbie and Steven Breton of Litchfield, N.H., and Stephanie and Tom Rogers of Brookline, N.H. Carol was the loving grandmother of nine grandchildren and their spouses or partners, Jared and Alex Breton of Torrance, Calif., Alyssa Breton and Connor Marks of Auburn, N.H., Jessica and Tom Forkan of Bradenton, Fla., Adam Breton of Litchfield, N.H., Sophia Breton, of Litchfield, N.H., Lauren Rogers of Brookline, N.H., Cameron Breton of Litchfield, N.H., Tyler Breton of Litchfield, N.H., and Alex Breton of Litchfield, N.H.; and great-grandmother of Calvin Breton and Cedric Breton. Carol leaves behind brother-in-law, Henry Picard and his wife Debbie of Seabrook, N.H., and a sister-in-law, Sue Huntress and her husband Roy of Nottingham, N.H.; many loved cousins, notably Paul and Pauline Berube of Fall River, Mass. Carol was the aunt to many nieces and nephews including her sister Jane’s son, Christopher Long and his wife Stacy and their three young children of Brookfield, N.H. Carol leaves behind many friends that she made over her lifetime and whose friendships enriched her life. A dog-lover, she is survived by her and Gerry’s shih-tzu, Tucker and plenty of grand dogs and cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her younger sister, Jane M. Long.

Carol worked as a bookkeeper at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelmsford, Mass., for more than 30 years until retiring and moving with Gerry to Maine. Carol counted many of her previous coworkers as close and enduring friends. After retiring she and Gerry enjoyed the Maine beach life with many close friends and neighbors and travel.

Carol enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, Patriots’ football, and participating in Fantasy football with her grandchildren. She enjoyed talking with her friends. Carol was a zealous fan of Elvis Presley from childhood and she enjoyed Country music, ’50s rock n’ roll, and ’70s classic rock, taking her daughters to their first concerts at Boston Garden. Carol was not known for her driving skills and she didn’t enjoy driving. Some of her best memories are from traveling with family and friends. Carol loved the beach and especially the beach in front of her home at Old Orchard Beach. Above all, Carol loved and was proud of the family that she and Gerry built together. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.

Gratitude is given to Dr. J. Paul Marcoux and her caregivers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Chestnut Hill, Mass., Maine Medical Center, Portland, Andwell Health Partners hospice. Special mention and thanks to Carol’s neighbors who sustained her comfort and safe well-being in her own home during her final days and to good friend Stephanie Roche for watching over her cherished dog, Tucker.

At Carol and her family’s request, services will be private and arrangements will be handled by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford. For online condolences, visit: http://www.hopememorial.com
