Obituary: Alina (Malec) Waterhouse
100%

Alina Waterhouse, whose journey from a small Polish village to the streets of Portland exemplified the American immigrant story, died Aug. 23 at her home. She was 92.

Born in Nowosiolki, Poland, Waterhouse crossed an ocean and built a life defined by determination, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to her family. She married Ray Waterhouse in 1958, beginning a partnership that would span 68 years.

"Her tenacious spirit never wavered, even in the most challenging times," her family noted.

Waterhouse raised two daughters, Deb and Lori, in Maine, instilling in them the values that guided her own life. Her legacy continues through her four grandsons—Timothy, Max, Luke, and Tyler—and her two great-grandchildren, Sam and Ruby, with another expected soon.

Those who knew her describe a woman of fierce loyalty and an open heart. Neighbors recall her willingness to help anyone in need, often arriving at a struggling family's door with a warm meal or a listening ear. Her home was always open, her table always full.

"She never forgot where she came from, but she fully embraced where she was going," her daughter Deb said.

Waterhouse passed peacefully, surrounded by her family. A private memorial service was held in accordance with her wishes.

Those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, an organization reflecting her lifelong commitment to caring for others. Arrangements were handled by Conroy Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland.
