NYPD investigating after surveillance video captures group entering sewers through manholes

NYC Police Probe Unexplained Sewer Entry in Brooklyn
New York City authorities are investigating after surveillance video captured multiple people entering a manhole in the Flatbush neighborhood late Thursday night, only to surface several hours later.
The footage, released by local news partners, shows two separate groups accessing the underground system — one near McDonald Avenue just after 11 p.m. Thursday, and another on a nearby street around the same time. Both groups emerged roughly three hours later, just before sunrise on Friday, according to police statements.
In response, the NYPD and several partner agencies launched a coordinated sweep of the area. By Friday morning, officials had completed their inspection and confirmed the neighborhood was safe, with no hazardous materials or structural concerns detected. The city’s Department of Environmental Protection also reviewed the site, reporting no damage to the sewer infrastructure.
A police spokesperson said Friday that authorities had responded to reports of unauthorized individuals in the sewer system and completed a thorough sweep, determining the area safe and free of hazards.
Despite the all-clear, investigators admit they are still working to identify the individuals and understand why they entered the system. The spokesperson said they are following up on all leads.
A DEP representative emphasized that entering the sewer system poses serious and potentially life-threatening risks, noting sewers can contain dangerous gases, unstable footing, unexpected flooding and confined spaces that are unsafe for untrained persons, and that entering any manhole, pipe, drain or outfall is strongly discouraged and violates city codes.
The unusual video has since circulated widely online, drawing reactions ranging from bewilderment to concern. While no injuries were reported, officials noted that the outcome could have been far different without quick response times.
NYPD officials say they are following up on leads and reviewing additional footage. The case remains active, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
