NYPD detective released from hospital after being stabbed multiple times in Bronx

Bronx Detective Stabbed During Off‑Duty Robbery Walks Out of Hospital
A New York City Police Department detective was released from a Bronx hospital after sustaining multiple stab wounds during a robbery that occurred last Friday. Detective Jose Mercedes, who was off duty at the time, was attacked by two suspects on an electric bike while he was clearing the trunk of his car in the Norwood neighborhood.
According to police officials, the assailants attempted to steal Mercedes’ gold chain. When the detective tried to defend himself, the attackers stabbed and slashed him seven times. He chased the fleeing men for roughly two blocks before collapsing near the intersection of East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue.
Mercedes was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park, where he was treated for serious injuries. On Monday, the detective was moved from a wheelchair to his feet and walked out of the hospital on his own two legs. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch posted the moment on X, writing, “Today, in another incredible feat of strength and determination, Detective Mercedes got up from his wheelchair and walked out of Jacobi Medical Center on his own two feet. Hundreds of members of the NYPD were there to cheer their brother on.” She added, “The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery. And the greatest detectives in the world will relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime.”
City officials also attended the hospital. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, “I visited the detective and his family at Jacobi Hospital with Police Commissioner Tisch. I am hoping for his quick and complete recovery.”
While Mercedes is continuing his recovery, investigators have not yet identified or located the two attackers. Police say the suspects remain at large and are still being pursued. The incident underscores the risks faced by off‑duty officers and the ongoing challenges of ensuring public safety in the city’s outer boroughs.
