Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Miami Airport Runway, Strikes Vehicles, Killing Five

Miami, Fla. — An Amazon cargo Boeing 767 ran off the runway of Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking two vehicles on the airfield, a civilian car on the perimeter road and a fence near a Tesla robotaxi staging area. The crash left five people dead and five wounded, while two crew members survived.

The aircraft, operated by Miami‑based 21 Air LLC, had already completed two flights earlier that day. It departed Cincinnati for Miami, then flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico, before returning to the Florida airport. While landing, the jet failed to stop, overshot the runway, and ignited a brief fire.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the jet collided with a 2012 white Ford Econoline van carrying at least seven occupants. The van, owned by Ocean Service Corporation—a contract cleaning company that services airlines—was torn apart on the airfield. It was the vehicle that absorbed most of the impact.

After breaching the airport perimeter, the aircraft struck a Toyota Corolla Cross LE traveling on Northwest 67th Avenue. Investigators noted that airbags had deployed in both vehicles. The jet then continued 1,300 feet beyond the paved surface into the grass, impacting a fence that separated a designated robotaxi zone.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy described the wreckage as “devastating.” She pointed out tire marks that extended from the runway into the grass and the scattered debris that littered the scene. “You can see components from vehicles, both passenger vehicles and the aircraft itself,” she said.

The crash damaged airport navigational aids, equipment, and fencing throughout the area. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered and will be examined in the ongoing investigation.

The five fatalities and five injuries were a combination of passengers in the van and occupants of the Toyota. Two crew members on the aircraft survived the accident. The incident is still under investigation, with investigators awaiting the analysis of the recorders to determine the cause of the overrun.
