Polls have now closed in some states, and control of Congress hangs in the balance.
Prediction markets and polling firms showed Democrats as heavy favorites to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives, and surveys show they’re likely favorites to regain a majority in the U.S. Senate as well.
But the national map favored Republicans, with most Senate seats up for grabs in states that President Donald Trump won in 2024.
We may not know the final results for days. But here’s how they are playing out so far. You can come back to this page for regular updates.

What’s happening across the U.S.
Every U.S. House seat is up for grabs. So are 36 governorships — including Maine’s — and 35 U.S. Senate seats. Toggle between the Senate, House and governor tabs to see which party is performing better with voters.
Maine’s role in the balance of power
Maine has three high-profile races that could shape how the nation tilts politically for the next several years: The U.S. Senate; the 2nd Congressional District; and the governor.
Let’s dive into how they’re doing.
Maine’s U.S. Senate race
The final New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena Research Institute survey showed Democrat Troy Jackson leading incumbent Republican Sen. Collins by six points. But Collins has defied the odds before. This will be the most closely watched race of the night.
Maine’s two U.S. House seats
1st District
Democrat Chellie Pingree seeks a tenth term against Republican Ronald Russell. This district, home to Portland and southern Maine, is expected to go for Democrats, as it has done for the last three decades-plus.
2nd District
The 2nd District is much more interesting. Incumbent Democrat Jared Golden announced last year he wouldn’t seek reelection to the district. It has supported Trump each of the three times he’s sought the presidency. But it’s also been represented by a Democrat since 2018.
Former governor Paul LePage hopes to wrest the rural seat, which contains most of the land area of Maine, back from the Dems — and prognosticators said he was favored to do so.
Maine’s governor race
Democrat Hannah Pingree seems to be a solid favorite over Republican Bobby Charles and independent Rick Bennett, with the Pingree leading by double digits in most polls. The winner will succeed the term-limited Gov. Janet Mills, who is also a Democrat.
Maine’s Legislature
In Augusta, Democrats hold narrow majorities in both the House and the Senate. In the 151-member Maine House, the majority is 75-73 in favor of Democrats, with three Democratic-leaning independents in the lawmaking body as well. In the Maine Senate, Democrats hold a 20-14 majority, with one independent in the chamber.

Republicans have spent significant sums to try to win a majority in the House, knowing that a divided Augusta would make it harder for progressive policies to pass.
