North Yarmouth hires its next town manager
The North Yarmouth Select Board unanimously chose Britt Barton to serve as the town’s next manager.

Barton will start a three-year contract on Aug. 3, replacing Diane Barnes. Barnes held the position for more than four years and announced her retirement in January.
A New Gloucester resident, Barton has served as Gray’s town clerk for three years. Prior to that, she worked for eight years in banking before she decided she wanted to take her financial experience into public service.
“I’ve always been a big fan of giving back,” said Barton. “Being involved in my community has always been really important to me.”
Over the past two years in Gray, Barton took on more responsibilities and learned more about municipal management, she said.
As North Yarmouth’s town manager, she said she aims to be approachable, serve the community and find solutions for residents. As Maine’s town managers see high rates of turnover and increasing obstacles, Barton said she will approach challenges day-by-day and with an open mind.

Barton is 34 years old — younger than many town managers in the state, but a decade older than Madison’s town manager, who started in June at 24.
“We’re very excited to have Britt come join us,” said Select Board member Paul Whitmarsh when board unanimously approved her contract on July 22. “A fresh set of eyes and probably some new ideas and new ways of doing things.”
Barton will also take over as the town’s appointed tax collector and treasurer from Barnes. Don Gerrish is currently serving as interim town manager.
“I am confident that the North Yarmouth team will continue to thrive, and I will always carry the memories of my time here with great pride and gratitude,” said Barnes in her retirement letter.
