Newt Gingrich reflects on what sets Trump apart from other leaders at GOP midterm convention

Newt Gingrich reflects on what sets Trump apart from other leaders at GOP midterm convention

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich offered a candid assessment of former President Donald Trump’s style during a “Hang Out With Sean Hannity” podcast recorded at last week’s Republican National Committee mid‑term convention in Dallas, Texas. The conversation, which ran for roughly an hour, aired on the RNC’s podcast platform and later became available on iHeartRadio, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other streaming services.

Gingrich, who has been a vocal supporter of Trump since the 2016 election and has written extensively about the former president’s rise to power, was asked by Hannity what distinguishes Trump from other political leaders. Gingrich answered that the president’s lack of boundaries and unapologetic authenticity are the defining traits, saying: “He has no boundaries… It’s good, and it’s bad. He’s totally authentic. Now the problem with that is he’s not editable because he’s totally authentic.” The former speaker went on to explain that this unfiltered nature can be both an asset and a liability, depending on the situation.

In addition to discussing personality, Gingrich noted Trump’s breadth of interests and his tendency to shift focus quickly. “He’s interested in everything,” Gingrich said. “He puttered along for a while, and he suddenly, bam, he did a bunch of very decisive, very important things, and now he’s off doing something else.” The former speaker cited recent policy moves in the space sector as an example. Trump’s administration has signed a new national space transportation policy aimed at expanding U.S. launch capacity, and the former president issued an executive order establishing a commission to develop a proposal for a NASA‑led U.S. Space Academy.

The comments came as the Republican Party gathered for its first ever mid‑term convention, a two‑night event held in Dallas that serves as a platform for party leaders to rally support ahead of the November congressional elections. The convention featured a keynote address from President Trump and Vice‑President JD Vance, both of whom spoke to the party’s goals for retaining congressional majorities. Gingrich’s remarks were part of a broader discussion about the president’s leadership style and its impact on the GOP’s strategy.

While Gingrich praised Trump’s authenticity, he also acknowledged its potential downsides, suggesting that the former president’s unwillingness to be edited could lead to unpredictable or controversial statements. The former speaker’s remarks echo a pattern that has emerged throughout the president’s tenure: a willingness to take bold, sometimes sudden actions, followed by a pivot to a new priority.

The RNC’s mid‑term convention in Dallas was a rare opportunity for Republican leaders to convene on the same stage and outline a unified message. In addition to Trump and Vance, the convention featured speeches from other prominent GOP figures and showcased the party’s focus on key legislative issues such as fiscal policy, immigration, and national security. Gingrich’s interview added a historical perspective, drawing on his experience as Speaker of the House from 1995 to 1999 and his long‑standing involvement in Republican politics.

The “Hang Out With Sean Hannity” podcast format, which blends informal conversation with political analysis, allowed Gingrich to provide a nuanced view of Trump’s leadership. By highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses of the former president’s authenticity, the former House speaker offered listeners a balanced assessment that reflects his own longstanding support for the GOP’s direction under Trump.

As the election cycle heats up, GOP leaders—including Gingrich—continue to emphasize the importance of unity and strategic messaging. Trump’s recent policy moves in the space industry, coupled with his charismatic and unpredictable style, remain central to the party’s narrative. Whether the president’s unfiltered approach will help or hinder the GOP’s congressional goals remains a question for the coming months, but Gingrich’s candid reflections provide a clear snapshot of the traits that have defined Trump’s presidency and, according to the former speaker, will likely continue to shape American politics.
