New wheelchair-friendly trail opens at Gilsland Farm, enhancing access to Maine's natural beauty

Gilsland Farm Audubon Center Opens New Accessible Trail for All
Falmouth, Maine – The Gilsland Farm Audubon Center has added a new accessible trail that opens its scenic grounds to a wider audience, including visitors with mobility challenges. The trail, designed for ease of use by wheelchairs, walkers, and anyone who prefers a smoother path, allows people to experience the natural beauty of Maine’s coastal woods, wetlands, and fields in a way that was not possible before.
The trail’s installation is part of the Center’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and environmental education. By providing a path that meets accessibility standards, the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center hopes to encourage more people to explore the region’s wildlife habitats, learn about local ecosystems, and enjoy the calm of the nearby estuary.
Located on the 320‑acre property in Falmouth, the new trail weaves through oak and pine forests, across gently sloping grasslands, and along a small stream that feeds into the Atlantic. The design features firm, even surfaces and gentle curves, ensuring that those with limited mobility can navigate safely while still taking in the sights and sounds of the surrounding landscape.
Visitors who have walked the trail describe the experience as “refreshing” and “inspiring.” Many note that the accessibility features allow families with young children in strollers or seniors in walkers to spend time outdoors without hesitation. The Gilsland Farm Audubon Center aims to make its natural resources available to the entire community, offering a welcoming place for both recreation and learning.
The new trail is available to the public now, with no admission fee for access. The Center encourages anyone in the area to visit, explore, and appreciate Maine’s natural heritage through the inclusive path that has just opened.
