New sports bar-nightclub venue planned for Free Street

A new downtown sports bar and nightclub is slated to open this fall in the former Binga’s Stadium space on Free Street.
Ubu’s Sports Pub & Club is on track to launch in October, according to owner Frank Berenyi. The massive, two-floor venue at 77 Free St. most recently hosted Free Street restaurant and cocktail bar, which shuttered after three years in a spate of Portland closings in 2024. Prior to that, the space was Binga’s Stadium from 2009 to 2021.
Berenyi said the ground-floor pub and restaurant will feature about 50 television screens and 100 seats, including a 40-seat bar. Food will include smoked barbecue and pub fare like wings, burgers and pizza, along with buffets a few days a week.
“Everything is so pricey in the restaurant industry now,” Berenyi said. “My goal is to make really good food with a really reasonable price. I want to undercut the market. We’re going to have incredible pricing.”
The basement-level nightclub will feature DJs, dancing and live entertainment. Berenyi owned the former Shenanigans nightclub in Augusta. He has also owned bars in Old Orchard Beach and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
