Red Sox’s Adley Rutschman Drives Boston to 6‑5 Victory Over Orioles in Home‑coming Show
Baltimore, Md. — In a night that felt almost like a homecoming, Boston’s All‑Star catcher Adley Rutschman delivered a double‑homer performance to lead the Red Sox past the Orioles 6‑5 at Camden Yards on Thursday night.
Rutschman, who was traded from Baltimore to Boston at the early‑August trade deadline, opened the game with a solo home run off Orioles’ right‑hander Brandon Young on a 1‑1 pitch in the first inning. The homer marked the 10th of the season for the 26‑year‑old and the second since he joined the Red Sox. He followed up with a second solo shot in the sixth inning, cutting Baltimore’s 3‑2 lead and setting the stage for a late rally that gave Boston the win.
After he stepped up to bat in the first inning, the crowd in the outfield erupted into a standing ovation, and the Orioles’ dugout joined in the applause. A video tribute was shown to Rutschman between the first and second innings, and the catcher again drew cheers after his first hit, despite the fact that he had already been a significant offensive threat for his new team.
“I’ve had a lot of memories and a lot of positive experiences in Baltimore. The people here have always treated me with an unbelievable amount of respect and love, and I’ve always felt that when I’ve been here,” Rutschman said before the game. “So just a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
He added, “It’s a lot of feelings going on. Different being over on this side,” and repeated, “A lot of memories, a lot of positive memories.” Rutschman’s comments underscored the bittersweet nature of the night, as he had left the Orioles’ organization only a few weeks earlier.
Rutschman’s return to Baltimore also highlighted his personal journey. Drafted No. 1 overall by the Orioles in 2019, he made his major‑league debut in 2022 and was part of a turnaround that saw Baltimore win the AL East in 2023 and make the playoffs in 2024. The past two seasons, however, had been less successful, and the trade to Boston gave him a fresh start. He said, “It’s nothing but positive things to say about the Orioles, the organization, the staff, the players, coaches, just from top to bottom. From getting drafted up until the trade deadline this year, it’s been a phenomenal experience.”
The Red Sox, who currently hold the second wild‑card spot in the American League, will look to keep their momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. Meanwhile, the Orioles have stayed in the race, entering Thursday one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third wild‑card spot.
After the game, Orioles manager Craig Albernaz spoke about the moment when Rutschman returned to the clubhouse. “He couldn’t help himself. He stopped into the clubhouse quickly,” Albernaz said. “A lot of hugs, a lot of crap talk going back and forth. It was good to see him.”
With the 6‑5 victory, Boston’s win added another win to its record as it chases a playoff berth, while Baltimore continues to chase the final wild‑card berth, both teams looking ahead as the season winds down.
