Mystery woman arrested in American's death after manhunt in Costa Rican tourist destination

Woman Arrested in Costa Rica After 74‑Year‑Old American Found Dead in Playas del Coco
A woman identified as María Ortiz was taken into custody by Costa Rican authorities on Tuesday after the fatal death of William Fleming, a 74‑year‑old United States citizen, was discovered in a condominium near the beach in the popular tourist town of Playas del Coco on the country’s northern Pacific coast.
According to a video statement released by the Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Agency (JIA), Deputy Director Vladimir Muñoz said Ortiz was arrested at around 12:30 p.m. at a residence in San Felipe de Alajuelita. Muñoz added that the arrest followed confidential tips that had been sent to law enforcement.
Fleming’s body was found on September 27 at 4:50 p.m. at the condominium, according to JIA officials. The 74‑year‑old tourist had met Ortiz online before the incident. “Fleming met Ortiz online and picked her up near Playas del Coco before driving her to his apartment,” Muñoz explained. He said the couple later got into a dispute, during which Ortiz allegedly struck Fleming, causing a fatal head injury.
Ortiz is also accused of stealing Fleming’s bank cards, although authorities have not yet determined whether the cards were used. In security footage released by police, Ortiz is seen walking down a street in the town wearing blue denim shorts, sandals, and a white bra with chain‑like accessories. The footage also shows her accompanied by another woman who has been arrested in connection with the case.
The incident has drawn attention to the safety of tourists in the region. Playas del Coco, known for its beaches and vibrant nightlife, is a frequent destination for travelers from the United States and elsewhere. Local authorities have urged visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The JIA will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Fleming’s death. Ortiz’s legal status and the outcome of any criminal proceedings remain pending.
