Missouri Football Player Undergoes Successful Heart Transplant, Announces Recovery

The Missouri Tigers’ freshman offensive lineman, Johnnie “DJ” Jones, is on the road to recovery after a heart transplant surgery that was performed earlier this week. Coach Eli Drinkwitz shared the positive update on Thursday through a post on the team’s official social‑media channel, saying the operation went well and the player is now recuperating.

Jones, an 18‑year‑old from Venice, Florida, had been in the hospital at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville while waiting for a suitable donor. The transplant was the result of a heart defect that was uncovered during the mandatory heart screening conducted when the Tigers began recruiting and enrolling new players over the summer. Although Jones had shown no symptoms, the screening revealed an abnormality that required further evaluation.

After two weeks of observation that did not yield a clear diagnosis, Missouri’s medical staff sought a second opinion. The Mayo Clinic team identified a far more serious heart condition and determined that a transplant was necessary. The Tigers’ staff were informed last week that Jones needed the procedure, and the surgery was carried out shortly thereafter.

Coach Drinkwitz expressed deep gratitude for the care team and the donor family, writing, “We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible.” He also noted that the surgery had gone well and that Jones is in a recovery phase.

Jones was a four‑star recruit who signed with Missouri after graduating from Venice High School. He was listed as a key part of the Tigers’ offensive line as the team entered Week 6 of the college football season with a 4‑1 record, preparing to host Columbia on Saturday.

While the young player is still in the early stages of his recovery, the Tigers and their supporters are hopeful for a full return to the field. The team’s medical staff will continue to monitor Jones’ progress closely as he works toward regaining his strength and fitness for the remainder of the season.
