A male passenger on the Carnival Panorama reportedly jumped overboard while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Long Beach, California, the cruise line confirmed on Saturday. The incident occurred during the final leg of the ship’s week‑long itinerary, which began in Long Beach on September 13.

According to a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson, the crew first heard a call for a missing guest at about 11 a.m. on Saturday. The ship had departed Puerto Vallarta the previous evening, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, and was making its way back to the United States when the passenger vanished.

The company’s statement said, “When notified of a missing guest, the ship’s team initiated search and investigation procedures, including reviewing CCTV footage and notifying both the U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards.” The search was organized quickly. At roughly 3 p.m., the ship reportedly turned its course, and an announcement was made at 3:30 p.m. to conduct a ship‑wide search. All guests were asked to return to their staterooms, and security personnel inspected the rooms, checking the identification cards that every passenger carries on board—a standard protocol in such situations.

An additional announcement about an ongoing search was issued an hour later, again instructing passengers to remain in their cabins. By 5 p.m., the captain and cruise director confirmed that the missing passenger had indeed gone overboard, a determination reached after a review of onboard camera footage. The spokesperson added that local authorities would continue the search and rescue operation. Passengers were no longer required to stay in their rooms following the confirmation.

Family members and other travelers who were accompanying the missing guest were notified of the situation and offered support from the ship’s care team. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” the spokesperson said.

Despite the thorough search, the article does not report whether the passenger was located or rescued. The ship was expected to arrive in Long Beach at 9 a.m. the following morning, a schedule that was communicated to passengers after the incident.

The incident, which has attracted attention on social media, underscores the challenges of ensuring passenger safety on long‑haul cruises. Carnival Cruise Line’s statement reiterated that the company is cooperating fully with the U.S. and Mexican coast guards and is providing ongoing support to the family of the missing passenger.
