Minnesota GOP Chair Accuses Protesters of Racial Intimidation After KKK Sign Display at Dinner

In a tense confrontation over a recent fundraising event, the chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party accused a group of protesters of racial intimidation during a disruptive standoff at the Lincoln Reagan Dinner in Eagan.

The disruption took place late Friday night, when demonstrators breached the stage area of the private function. According to the Minnesota Republican Party, the interruption involved individuals holding a sign that read "RepubliKKKan Party" while House Speaker Lisa Demuth addressed the crowd. The chairman described the behavior as a deliberate attempt to instill fear among attendees.

"Last night, radical protesters stormed the stage at our Lincoln Reagan Dinner and held up a KKK symbol while Speaker Lisa Demuth spoke," Alex Plechash stated in a message posted to X. He characterized the actions as an assault on a Black woman leader, emphasizing that the symbols used were intended to evoke "a symbol of racial terror."

The incident marked the second time the event had been disrupted since the evening began. Earlier, protesters had interfered with remarks made by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya. During the subsequent address by Speaker Demuth, approximately three or four individuals moved toward the front of the room, carrying banners. Plechash estimated the disturbance lasted roughly thirty seconds and did not pose a physical threat to anyone present.

The motivations behind the disruption were outlined by Sunrise Movement Twin Cities, the progressive activist organization responsible for the protest. The group asserted that their demonstration was a response to Republican policies they believe harm marginalized communities and immigrants. In a statement, the organization declared, "We disrupted this fundraiser because we refuse to give a moment's peace to the people bankrolling racial violence." They explicitly noted that the demonstration was not affiliated with the state’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

In contrast, the Minnesota Republican Party views the event as a serious breach of decorum and civil rights. Chairman Plechash labeled the protesters "radical" and warned that such conduct has no place in Minnesota politics. He extended his criticism beyond the immediate incident, directing fire at Minnesota Democrats. Specifically, he singled out Democratic-Farmer-Labor Senator Amy Klobuchar and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, accusing them of remaining silent on issues of racism and criminal behavior within the state's political sphere.

"Intimidation, criminal behavior, and racist rhetoric have no place in Minnesota politics," Plechash wrote. He added that Republicans would prefer the DFL to engage in open debate rather than remain passive.

Following the altercation, Eagan police responded by issuing trespass orders to the individuals involved. The chairman confirmed that potential legal charges were currently under investigation. Despite the chaos, Plechash maintained that the disruption was brief and non-violent, stating that security personnel successfully escorted the demonstrators out of the venue.

The clash highlights the deep polarization surrounding the upcoming gubernatorial race, which saw Speaker Demuth secure the Republican nomination. The incident underscores the contentious atmosphere surrounding the party's future direction, particularly as the GOP seeks to define its platform in the wake of the controversy.
