I must respond to Rick Savage’s Oct. 18 op-ed, “The Mills-Pingree machine crushed small business in Maine. Hannah Pingree will finish the job.” Before COVID-19, my family thought his brewery was adequate. But then he selfishly and repeatedly defied emergency regulations for his profit, as the only restaurant open for miles, forcing the state into battle to protect public health.

During the year before vaccines, my family, like many, did everything we could to protect our 80-something mother from contracting the virus. I’m certain it would have killed her as painfully as it killed millions. The shutdowns would have ended sooner, with far fewer Maine deaths, if everyone acted like grown-ups.

True American patriots pull together to defend health and safety in hard times, while others take advantage. Thanks, “Mills-Pingree machine,” for serving us unselfishly in one of the hardest times our country has ever seen.
