Michael J Fox receives standing ovation at 2026 Emmys for Parkinson's disease advocacy work

Michael J. Fox Receives Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at 2026 Emmy Awards
Michael J. Fox was honored with the Television Academy’s Bob Hope Humanitarian Award during the 2026 Emmy Awards held on Monday night. The award, presented jointly by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, was given to the actor for his lifelong advocacy and philanthropy in support of Parkinson’s disease research.
Fox, who was diagnosed with young‑onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29, made his public announcement in 1998. In his acceptance address he recalled, “Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret. I worried that it would affect my work and my relationship with audiences.” He went on to thank fans for their support, saying, “It was so uplifting. It made me feel like I could keep doing this and I hadn’t lost what I do and they couldn’t take this away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me, and I really appreciate it.”
The award itself has been given annually since 2002. It recognizes a television‑industry figure whose charitable work has had a lasting impact on society. Fox’s foundation is “close” to discovering a cure for Parkinson’s, a goal he highlighted during his speech.
He attended the ceremony with his wife, Tracy Pollan. The couple had not appeared at the Emmy Awards in 13 years, making the moment a significant homecoming for the pair.
The stage reaction was immediate. Fox received a standing ovation, with applause echoing throughout the venue as he took the microphone and delivered his heartfelt remarks.
The news quickly spread across social media. On X, several users praised Fox’s perseverance and influence. One tweet read, “Michael J. Fox ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏We can all learn so much from him.🙏🏻👍,” while another noted, “I really do think we underestimate how much Michael J. Fox really put Parkinson’s ‘on the map’ so to speak. I knew about it as a little kid because of him and his advocacy for it.” A third comment called Fox “an inspiration. The guy got dealt an awful hand.”
The Emmy Awards’ recognition of Fox’s humanitarian efforts underscores the importance of his ongoing work in Parkinson’s research and his commitment to raising public awareness of the disease.
