Gridiron Glory: Maine's Top Football Players to Watch This Season

Maine's high school football landscape is buzzing with talent as the 2026 season approaches. From record-setting quarterbacks to dominant defensive forces, the state's programs boast an impressive array of athletes ready to make their mark.

Quarterbacks Stealing the Spotlight

Yarmouth's Iggy McGrath has already cemented his legacy as the Clippers' all-time leading passer. The senior quarterback torched defenses for over 2,700 yards and 38 touchdowns against just three interceptions last season, guiding Yarmouth to a 7-2 record. He'll have his top target back in Jackson Jabar, who hauled in 1,034 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

Greely's Luke Piper returns after leading the Rangers to an unbeaten Class C championship season in their transition back to 11-man football. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound signal caller threw for 1,534 yards and 22 touchdowns while adding 465 rushing yards and eight scores. His defensive prowess—49 tackles and eight interceptions—makes him a complete player.

Morse's Dylan Root proved clutch in playoff upsets over Poland and Dirigo, accumulating 675 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns alongside 855 passing yards and six scores. The Shipbuilders will lean heavily on his dual-threat abilities.

Running Backs Carrying the Load

Several backs are primed for breakout campaigns. Jaydiin Ruiz of Medomak Valley rushed for over 1,400 yards as a freshman and 860 more last season despite missing the first three games with a non-football injury. The junior returns as a two-year all-conference selection.

Oceanside's Wyatt Banow, a junior, serves as the Mariners' workhorse after surpassing 800 rushing yards in a difficult 0-8 season. He plays all three defensive levels and will benefit from a big, veteran offensive line.

Greg Castoras of Marshwood posted 835 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on just 92 carries, showcasing breakaway ability. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound fullback also contributed 13 tackles for loss defensively and will see increased carries under first-year coach Andrew Elwell.

Defensive Dynamos

Westbrook's Camillo Jones, a 6-foot-3, 253-pound defensive force, earned Class B South Defensive Lineman of the Year honors as part of the Blue Blazes' state championship team. His closing speed and size make him a dominant presence.

Noble's Carter Ouellette, a powerfully built 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker, made 123 tackles with two sacks and two forced fumbles last season, earning Varsity Maine All-State recognition. He projects as a major offensive weapon this fall.

Thornton Academy's Brennan Tabor battled through injuries last season but delivered crucial plays in the A South final and state championship game. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker/running back returns as the Golden Trojans seek to defend their Class A title.

Versatile Threats

Portland's Alex Martin, one of three returning Varsity Maine All-State players for the Bulldogs, accumulated over 1,000 all-purpose yards (579 rushing, 307 receiving, 256 returning) and made 91 tackles with 12 for loss. He anchors Portland's pursuit of a fourth consecutive A North championship under new coach Dylan Rottkov.

Cheverus' AJ Lauture, standing 6-foot-4, caught 25 passes for 490 yards and five touchdowns in his debut high school season. The senior shifts from safety to middle linebacker as the Stags transition from their single-wing offense to a spread scheme.

Traip Academy's JV Blanco, one of just two seniors on a 19-player roster, contributed across the board with 741 rushing yards, 339 receiving yards, two kick return touchdowns, 40 tackles, and three interceptions.

New Faces Leading Programs

Several programs undergo coaching changes. Camden Hills, returning to 11-man football in Class B North, welcomes Nate Walrath as first-year head coach. The Windjammers feature Braden Beveridge, who accumulated 577 rushing yards, 657 receiving yards, and 17 total touchdowns in eight-man competition.

Cape Elizabeth, coming off a 1-7 season, hired Issiah Bachelder as its new coach. River Duffy, a former Idaho resident, anchors the Capers as their top all-around player and defensive leader.

Old Orchard Beach's Cooper Gallant, just a sophomore, led the eight-man Small School South champions in tackles as a freshman. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound athlete dedicated his offseason to training and will expand his offensive role.

Championship Contenders

Bonny Eagle's Corbin Richard, a 6-foot-3, 325-pound offensive tackle/defensive tackle, attracts serious Division III college attention. The Scots return four offensive line starters and harbor championship aspirations.

Falmouth's Owen Ross, who scored in the Class B state championship as a sophomore, returns as the Navigators' lead back. His 6-foot, 190-plus frame and breakaway speed make him a constant threat.

Lake Region's Braydan Wilson, at 6-foot-6 and 200 pounds, takes over quarterback duties for an eight-man Large School team with 40 players and ambitions of improving on last year's 4-5 record.
