Maryland hunter's alleged mistake leaves Delaware mother dead

A 74‑year‑old Maryland hunter has been arrested on manslaughter and related charges after a fatal shooting in an open field in Ellendale, Delaware. The incident, which occurred on a Friday evening at roughly 7:40 p.m., has left the community stunned and the case still under investigation.
Walter Moorhead, a resident of Maryland, was hunting deer from a ground blind— a camouflaged structure that allows hunters to remain hidden from wildlife— when he reportedly saw what he believed to be a deer. According to Delaware State Police, Moorhead fired his rifle, striking Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 39, who was walking with a companion and two children. Soto was immediately taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
State troopers responded to the scene and provided emergency medical care before Soto was transported to the hospital. Police later arrested Moorhead and charged him with recklessly causing the death of another person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and three counts of first‑degree reckless endangerment.
Moorhead was released from custody after posting a $43,000 cash bond. Prosecutors said the bail is part of standard procedure while the case proceeds through the court system. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and witness statements.
Soto, a mother of five, was described by family and friends as a “beloved” aunt and community member. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help her family cover funeral costs and the expenses involved in shipping her body to Guatemala. The fundraiser has raised roughly $12,000 as of Monday evening, but the family remains in mourning and financially strained.
The tragic event has prompted calls for increased safety measures in hunting areas and for clearer communication between hunters and the public. Law enforcement officials reiterated that hunters must remain vigilant and verify any potential targets before discharging firearms.
As the case moves forward, the Delaware community continues to grapple with the loss of a young mother and the shock of a fatal mistake on a hunting field. The investigation remains active, and authorities will update the public as new information becomes available.
