Man who drowned in South Portland apartment pool identified

A man drowned in a pool in South Portland on Monday.
He was later identified as Evariste Niyitegeka, born in 1981, according to South Portland Police Chief Daniel Ahern.
Niyitegeka had been pulled from the bottom of the pool at Cortland Court on Westbrook Street before the South Portland Fire Department responded to the call just before 1 p.m., according to Fire Chief Phil Selberg.
The crew provided care for about 30 minutes, but were unable to revive Niyitegeka.
The South Portland Police Department is handling the investigation, and Ahern said that preliminary information indicates that it was an accident. A medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.
