One Killed, Three Injured in Fatal Maine Turnpike Crash Following Deer Evasion
GRAY, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating a fatal collision on the Maine Turnpike in Gray that left one person dead and injured three others late Friday night.
The passengers of the vehicles involved include 38-year-old Soda Mao of Auburn, who was killed in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle, a 31-year-old Auburn woman named Megan Stuart, survived with non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center. A driver and a passenger in the second car also sustained minor injuries.
The accident began around 11:47 p.m. on Friday, near mile marker 60. Stuart was driving a 2010 Honda Fit northbound when she swerved to avoid a deer. The evasive maneuver caused her vehicle to strike a guardrail and spin out of control, sending it into the path of oncoming traffic. The Honda Fit then collided head-on with a 2016 Chevy Malibu traveling northbound in the opposing lanes.
To clear the wreckage, authorities shut part of the Maine Turnpike for approximately 20 minutes. Crews also kept Lane 1 closed for about two hours to manage the scene. Emergency response was provided by the Falmouth Fire Department and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
The crash remains under investigation. Police have not released further details regarding the status of the investigation at this time.
