Maine Caregivers: The State’s Quiet Pillars and the Resources They Need

Nearly one‑in‑three Maine adults are family caregivers, and for the state’s 300,000 or more people who provide day‑to‑day help, the work is both vital and exhausting. From preparing meals to managing medications, caregivers keep aging parents, spouses, friends, and neighbors safe in the homes where they choose to stay.

The task is unpaid and driven by love, but the demands are real. “Many caregivers work full‑ or part‑time jobs, and some raise children while caregiving,” said a spokesperson from AARP Maine. “They also have to navigate complex health‑care systems, make difficult decisions, and take on responsibilities they never expected.” The physical, emotional, and financial toll can feel overwhelming.

AARP Maine’s Commitment

AARP Maine, an advocacy arm of the national organization, has made it its mission to give these “unsung heroes” the support they deserve. The state’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program is a prime example. Under PFML, eligible workers can take up to 12 weeks of paid, job‑protected leave to care for a loved one, recover from a serious health condition, welcome a new child, or address other qualifying family needs. “No one should have to choose between family and financial security,” the organization stressed in a recent announcement.

“Paid Family and Medical Leave is a major step forward for Maine caregivers and working families,” said the AARP Maine representative. “It ensures that those who care for others can do so without sacrificing their own livelihood.”

Practical Tools for Immediate Help

Beyond policy, AARP Maine offers a free “Maine Family Caregiver Resource Guide.” The guide is a “roadmap” to programs and services across the state, covering everything from caregiver support groups and transportation assistance to financial resources, legal help, and respite care. Caregivers are encouraged to use the guide not only for external support but also to prioritize their own well‑being. “Too often, caregivers focus entirely on the needs of others while neglecting their own health,” the organization warned.

The guide is available online at aarp.org/caregiverresources and can be ordered by calling 1‑877‑333‑5885. It is designed to serve anyone at any stage of the caregiving journey, whether they are just beginning or have been helping for years.

Connecting Caregivers to Local Help

AARP Maine has also teamed up with 211 Maine, the state’s free, 24‑hour phone and online resource. Through the partnership, caregivers can dial 211 to speak with trained specialists who identify local services tailored to their unique needs. “We want caregivers to know they are not alone,” the AARP spokesperson said. “We are in their corner and will continue to fight for policies that save them time and money.”

Why the Support Matters

Maine’s population is aging. According to state data, about 30% of adults will either be caregivers or have provided care in the past year, and the number of older residents who wish to remain in their communities continues to grow. As the demand for care rises, so does the need for accessible resources and supportive policies.

AARP Maine’s multifaceted approach—advocacy for PFML, a comprehensive resource guide, and a partnership with 211—provides both immediate help and long‑term protection for families who keep Maine’s seniors safe and independent.

Get the Help You Need

If you or someone you love is caring for an older adult, AARP Maine is ready to assist. Explore paid leave options at maine.gov/paidleave, download the free resource guide, or call 211 for local connections. For more information on caregiving support, visit aarp.org/mecares.

Maine’s caregivers deserve recognition, resources, and the relief that comes from knowing they are not alone. Through policy, tools, and community partnerships, AARP Maine is working to ensure that caregivers can continue their essential work without sacrificing their own health or financial security.
