Maine’s Role Model on ‘Tonight Show’ Thursday

Tucker Pillsbury is getting a lot of attention on the eve of his first big Maine show on Friday at Thompson’s Point in Portland.
Pillsbury, a pop star who performs under the name Role Model, is slated to be a guest on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” Thursday. He’s listed on the NBC website as both a guest and the show’s musical performer. So he’ll get to sit down and talk to Fallon, as well as play a song. The other guests on Thursday’s show, which can be seen at 11:35 p.m. on NBC stations, are Shane Gillis and Betty Gilpin.

Pillsbury also made a surprise appearance on NBC’s “Today” show Thursday morning, coming on set while Al Roker was giving his weather forecast. The two talked about Pillsbury’s new album, “Chuck Timely &The Hourglass,” which comes out Friday. They also discussed the forecast in Maine, with temps in the high 80s and few clouds. Pillsbury said he was glad to see that, since he has “a hometown show in Maine tomorrow.”

Pillsbury starts his latest international tour Friday night with a sold-out show at Thompson’s Point in Portland. It’s his first Maine concert and more than 6,500 tickets were sold. On Saturday he’ll be signing copies of his new album, at the Bull Moose music store in South Portland.

Pillsbury, 29, has been getting a lot of national attention this summer, in anticipation of his new album, tour and a romcom he is filming with Natalie Portman called “Good Sex.” No release date for the movie has been announced.
In interviews with national publications this summer, he’s talked about those things, but has also gone out of his way to shout out his home state. He was especially ebullient about Maine for a cover story interview for Nylon Guys, a culture and lifestyle magazine, published Tuesday. But he’s also mentioned Maine, including his childhood fishing adventures, to Rolling Stone and Esquire.
Pillsbury has also talked extensively about Maine with the Press Herald in recent years, saying that coming back to the state helps keep him grounded and that he never misses the Independence Day fireworks on Portland’s Eastern Promenade. Several of his tattoos are to remind him of Maine, including a box of strawberries, a lobster and the script P from the Press Herald logo.
