Maine officials investigating Old Town bridge collapse that hurt 3 workers

State officials are investigating Thursday’s partial collapse of a bridge that was being replaced in Old Town.
A portion of the Llewellyn Estes Bridge, which was under construction, collapsed shortly before 2 p.m. while a construction crew was pouring cement for the bridge deck.
Public safety officials said three people sustained non-life-threatening injuries, with one of them being taken to the hospital. The people injured were construction contractors, the Maine Department of Transportation said Friday.

“MaineDOT personnel are on site and are engaged with the contractor and local officials to assess the incident, gather information, conduct a thorough fact-finding review, and to determine next steps,” the department said.
The department said it’s coordinating with local, state and federal agencies, including the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, though “no significant environmental impacts have been identified.” The bridge carries traffic over the Stillwater River.
Maine DOT and contractors from Woolwich-based Reed & Reed Inc. began work on the new bridge in 2023. A temporary detour bridge has been installed alongside it.
The department said it will also inspect the temporary bridge to ensure safety for workers and the public.
